Research Fellow - Advanced Physical Layer Techniques and Implementation

University of Surrey - Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

The Insitute for Communication Systems (ICS) is looking to recruit a new Research Fellow in the topic of Advanced Physical Layer Techniques for Future Wireless Communication Systems for an initial period up to the 31st March 2019.

ICS is the home of the 5G Innovation Centre and is the world’s first research Centre dedicated to the advanced technologies that will underpin the 5G network of the future. The Centre is working in partnership with some of the world’s leading mobile network operators, infrastructure and tools providers, media and communications organisations, such as, BBC, BT, Cobham, EE, Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe, Huawei, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, Telefonica, Teoco and Vodafone, as well as the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom. The Centre is carrying out world-leading research into higher-capacity lower-energy mobile-communication networks.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who will be responsible for the ongoing research and development of Advanced Physical Layer Techniques for Future Wireless Communication Systems.

The candidates must have:

  • Strong expertise in advanced signal processing for wireless communication systems, very good understanding of communications theory and recent research experience in the development of advanced physical layer algorithms and systems.
  • Very good understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of state-of-the-art physical layer and multiple access methods (e.g., MIMO, Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access, Techniques).
  • Excellent track record of publications in highly ranked journals and conferences in at least one of the above fields.
  • Excellent programming skills.

It would be desirable but not essential for the post holder to also have:

  • An understanding of the current and future challenges in 5G systems.
  • An overall working knowledge of cellular networks and a good understanding of the related standards.
  • Prior experience with wireless research platforms (e.g., USRPs, WARPs).
  • Practical working experience with test and measurement instrumentation.
  • Experience in grant proposal writing.

If you think you could join our innovative and dynamic team and be part of our cutting edge research projects we would love to hear from, you. For an informal discussion you can contact Dr Konstantinos Nikitopoulos (
