Postdoctoral Research Associate (Instrumentation)

Durham University - Physics

Fixed Term Contract until 30 September 2020

In a joint project between Durham University and CPI we are looking to appoint a postdoctoral research scientist, or a person with similar experience, with an interest in the development of optically based medical instrumentation and devices. The appointed person will work closely with University academics and local companies to lead the development of a wide range of healthcare related instruments, assisting in their path towards commercialisation. The position is ideally suited for somebody looking to gain instrument development experience in a commercial environment.

A new National Healthcare Photonics Centre is being established at Netpark in Sedgefield by CPI in close collaboration with Durham University. The aim of the centre is to help companies, from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, to develop healthcare related instruments, which have photonics technology at their core. In a three-year project supported by the European Regional Development Fund we aim to help companies, whose core expertise may not be in optics or photonics, develop prototype instrumentation. Devices could range from medical imaging systems based in the near infrared, through to fluorescence based diagnostic kits.

The role will entail working closely with local companies to help develop solutions and instrumentation to take technology towards the market. A track record in optical instrumentation is essential though this experience could come from a wide range of backgrounds from within the physical, chemical or biological sciences. An interest in biological systems and the application of physical science methods to the life sciences would be an advantage but prior experience working in the life sciences is not necessary.
