Research Fellow in Sensing Systems for Healthcare

University of Leeds - School of Mechanical Engineering

Are you an enthusiastic and motivated researcher with an interest applying engineering approaches to medical engineering challenges? Would you like to combine new sensing technologies with mechanical design, soft robotics and experimental methods to develop new systems for healthcare? Are you interested in the opportunity to gain experience working in a cross-disciplinary project with academics, clinicians and industry?

This project will involve exploratory research to develop novel tactile sensing technologies and investigate its exciting potential to transform treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers – a huge clinical challenge worldwide. This is a highly multidisciplinary project, funded by EPSRC, which will be conducted in close collaboration with groups including engineers, healthcare professionals and patients.

Diabetes affects over 4.5m of the UK population and the condition acts to affect soft tissues in the body, notably the feet, leading to formation of ulcers. Studies estimate that over 2.5% of those with diabetes will have a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), a hugely debilitating condition which has a significant impact on personal quality of life and costs the UK NHS up to £1.13billion each year. For effective diagnosis and treatment of DFU it is important to understand the behaviour of the sole of the patient’s foot.

In this project you will build on our proof-of-concept sensing research to develop a ‘next-generation’ in-shoe assessment system for DFU with the ability to measure pressures.

Holding a PhD (or be close to completion) or equivalent experience in an engineering or science discipline that involves sensing technology design and evaluation, you will have expertise in engineering design and multiphysics modelling/analysis software, and in sensing system fabrication, fabrication methods and testing.
