Reception Assistant

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Contract Duration: 1 year (initially).

Grading: 450 EUR per month (mini job).

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), and Rome (Italy).

The EMBL Reception is open Monday to Friday from 07.00 - 18.00 and is manned on a shift system. The successful candidate will work as a temporary employee covering early shifts or afternoons to deputise for his/her colleague in case of absences. In addition to assisting visitors to the Laboratory, processing the daily post and courier packages, and providing information to guests and employees, the person appointed will also take care of the busy telephone system. The work might also involve administration of petty cash.

In addition to the above, the reception staff is responsible for monitoring the fire call control centre, answering emergency calls, as well as alerting first aid helpers, fire wardens, and emergency doctors.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will be an open-minded person that demonstrates to be very friendly and supportive, highly flexible, very well organised, able to work under pressure with a high level of reliability and self-initiative. Good telephone manners as well as professional behaviour vis-à-vis guests and employees is vital. Good communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work in a team are required. Basic computer skills as well as a good command of both German and English are essential. An administrative background and work experience from a similar role, ideally in an international environment, is required.
