Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN Early Stage Researcher Post in Optimal Design of Multifunctional Composite Structures (fixed term)

Applications are invited to work with Dr Ender Ozcan, Dr Andrew Parkes and Dr Luc Jaouen, as part of a European-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Industrial Doctorate (EID) Network, “N2N”. Successful applicants will also register for a PhD at the University of Nottingham.

An important factor contributing to the quality and competitiveness of modern structural products (e.g. aircrafts and terrestrial vehicles) is comfort. Noise is a serious form of environmental pollution affecting the lives of hundreds of millions of citizens worldwide and having multiple socio-economic consequences. Intense vibration can endanger the structural integrity and performance of equipment and hardware. Modern industrial structures are increasingly made of composite materials due to their well-known benefits. Despite their superior structural characteristics, composite structures exhibit poor dynamic and acoustic isolation levels compared to conventional metallic ones. As a result and in order to maintain the comfort levels in the passenger and payload compartments within acceptable limits, additional acoustic and vibrational isolation technologies (sound packages) are necessary in several transport applications.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop and evaluate novel optimisation algorithms for designing lightweight and silent multifunctional and multiphysics structures combining composite and porous layers. 

Candidates must be in possession of (or expected to obtain) a first class or a 2:1 (MEng or MSc) degree in civil/mechanical engineering, applied mathematics/physics, material science, operational research, computer science, artificial intelligence or a relevant discipline, have excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and a background in composite structures and/or computational modelling. Candidates should have experience in programming using C++, Python, or similar. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Candidates should be able to work independently as well as a part of a team, prioritise tasks and work to tight deadlines. Knowledge of acoustics or experience in optimisation is highly desirable.

Candidates will also be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: ( In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in the (host country) UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment. 

This full-time post is available immediately and is offered on a fixed-term 36 month contract. This is an excellent opportunity to work in an international and multisectoral research environment. Candidates will spend time both in Nottingham at the School of Computer Science as well as in Lyon where MATELYS (a global leading industry in vibro-acoustics) is based. Intense mobility within, as well as outside Europe is envisaged throughout the duration of the project. The successful candidate will also benefit from a comprehensive training programme aiming at developing their softskills.
