Research Fellow in Epidemiology

London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine - Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology

We are seeking a Research Fellow to join a 1-year project on conducting epidemiological research on important outbreaks of infectious diseases. The successful candidate will collaborate with WHO, Ministries of Health, and other relevant partners, to document epidemiological aspects and control interventions of important outbreaks globally. For this project WHO has undertaken to establish agreements with all relevant parties around gaining access to data and for the preparation of publications. 

The post holder will be based within the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at LSHTM working with Prof Jimmy Whitworth but will also work closely with scientists in the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team and at WHO in Geneva, the regional offices, and where practical, with the relevant country offices. The person appointed will be expected to prepare research findings for scientific publication in collaboration with WHO, relevant Ministries of Health and other partners.

The successful candidate will lead the analyses, or will identify colleagues at LSHTM, including Masters students, to conduct the analyses alongside the postholder. The post holder will formulate researchable epidemiology questions relating to the outbreak, Undertake high quality research and scholarship including contributing to drafting major grant proposals and facilitate the analysis of the datasets and drafting of manuscripts for publications. 

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Public Health or closely related discipline; proficiency in the use of STATA for analysis of survey data; a good understanding of the epidemiology of emerging infectious diseases; experience of leading analyses for publication in the field of infectious disease epidemiology and high levels of diplomacy and negotiating ability. Experience of working independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team is required. 

The post is funded until 28 February 2019. The salary will be on the Academic pathways Grade 6 scale in the range £38,533 to £43,759 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London, Keppel Street.
