Infrastructure Specialist – Servers and Storage

The Post

The post-holder will work primarily on Linux/Unix based systems but will also be expected to contribute to the work of the Microsoft section and work in partnership with Network Infrastructure colleagues. As well as development work on new systems and services, and routine maintenance of existing ones, they will assist Operational Support colleagues in providing second line technical support for the resolution of end-user requests and fault reports. The role involves liaison with the Business Applications and Integrations team and with the front-line Customer Services staff of Information Services.

The scope of the post includes but is not limited to:

Supported Unix/Linux systems provide the following services:

  • Administrative databases (e.g. Finance, Student Records, Library, HR)
  • University and Departmental Web sites
  • Linux virtual machines for application services
  • Gateways and scanners (anti-virus & anti-spam) for staff and student email
  • Web based Portal to University resources/services for staff and students
  • Security and infrastructure communications services
  • DNS, DHCP, Web cache, VPN gateway
  • HPE (Microfocus) Data Protector tape backup
  • Security incident response handling

Windows systems (including Microsoft cloud-based services):

  • User account management (AD)
  • Staff and student filesystem
  • Staff and student email
  • Staff and student print system
  • Cloud services (e.g. Box, Azure)
  • Microsoft platform virtual servers
  • Data backup system

Essential Criteria

  • The post holder will possess either a degree in Computing or an IT-related subject OR equivalent education and experience
  • Proven experience of Linux systems administration, both raw metal and with enterprise virtualization such as RHEV, OVM, Ovirt, Ganetic.
  • OS shell scripting with Perl and Bash
  • Experience and understanding of the main internet protocols, such as HTTP, SMTP in order to troubleshoot web and email issues at a low level.
  • Proven experience of configuring/administering the network connectivity of server and client systems
  • A good understanding of internet networking, at least of IPv4
  • Good communication skills
  • Proven diagnostic and problem solving skills
  • A commitment to customer service
  • Capable of demonstrating a consistent and systematic approach to work

Desirable Criteria

  • Some exposure to the configuration of network switches, both for Ethernet and storage area networks
  • Some practise of cloud Infrastructure and Platform integration.
  • Conversant in cloud Infrastructure and Platform integration
