It is an exciting time to join the School of Social Policy, following the recent relocation of the Sociology subject group into the School and creation of the Department of Social Policy, Sociology & Criminology. The Department has experienced a rapid growth in academic staff, doubling in size and recently recruiting three Birmingham Fellows. This growth has created dynamic new research collaborations and opportunities. It has also enhanced our Sociology degree curriculum, leading to the creation of an exciting Joint Honours Sociology and Criminology degree.

Over the next 5 years, our strategic priorities seek to further enhance the international reputation of our sociological research and teaching programmes. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic Sociologist who can make a significant contribution and offer leadership in relation to the following objectives:

  • To build our research excellence and profile in one or more of the Departmental thematic areas: Social Theory and Social Transformation; Crime and Social Harm; Poverty, Wealth and Inequality; Ethnicity and Religion; Migration and Asylum; Civil Society and Volunteering;
  • To attract external research funding that enhances our ability to produce high quality sociological research and to sustain a vibrant research environment;
  • To develop a postgraduate taught provision for Sociology;

You will

  • Hold a higher Degree (usually PhD) in a related field
  • Have an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching demonstrated through an outstanding publications record
