Applications are invited from first-class graduates for a fully-funded research studentship within the Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research at Newcastle University. Energy research at Newcastle is a major success with almost £50m of funding over the last three years. The successful candidate will benefit from the significant research infrastructure and technical support offered by one of the UK’s largest energy research and training centres.

The PhD Challenge

The International Energy Agency estimates that 310 GW of additional grid-connected electricity storage capacity will be necessary in the United States, Europe, China and India. One promising energy storage technology is Pumped Heat Energy Storage (PHES) which offers storage at low-cost, low footprint and being deployable anywhere.

The National Facility for PHES is a world-leading exemplar of engineering innovation, research and development. The facility includes a first-of-a-kind demonstration of grid-scale energy storage.

The PhD candidate will support the experimental testing, thermodynamic analysis of the system and will evaluate the potential of the technology for integration into an energy network.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2:1 in a related subject such as engineering, science, physics or mathematics. The fully-funded studentship is only available to those applicants who are either UK/EU nationals or have a relevant connection with the UK (see for more details).
