The International Institute for Cavitation Research (IICR) was established in 2011 at CITY, with co-workers from City University, Loughborough University and TU Delft, supported by The Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Prof Gavaises is currently the Director of the IICR.

The Institute intends to appoint an outstanding academic to contribute to the delivery of pioneering research in the fields of fluid structure interaction, involving aspects of fluid and solid mechanics, compressible multiphase flows and bubble dynamics. Application will be mainly oriented towards the biomedical field, involving novel and efficient ultrasound techniques for drug delivery, histotripsy, lithotripsy, etc. Further applications may involve sonochemical reactions, surface cleaning and material erosion.


The main responsibility of the appointee as this is defined by the line manager or supervisor is to undertake research in the field specified to meet the aims, objectives and project specifications given by his line manager/supervisor(s).

To play a leading role in raising the national and international profile of the IICR by publishing articles in international journals, attendance at conferences, enhancing appropriate links with industry and Institutions and through other appropriate routes. To work as a member of the research centre within the discipline, playing a full part in the research life of the research team and colleagues.

Person Specification

A good first degree and PhD in engineering, or in physical sciences, chemistry or a related discipline.

The candidates at City, University of London must demonstrate substantial experience.
