Research Associate in Plasma-based Acceleration

Fixed term appointment for 24 months

We are looking for two Research Associates to work on developing next generation plasma based accelerators in the John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science.

One position will support the Institutes contribution to international developments such as EuPRAXIA and ELI-ALPS. The second position will support the work of the institute in development and uses of plasma based acceleration. The work typically would involve a high degree of teamwork and interdisciplinary research.

The post holder will be expected to help produce independent and original research, submit publications to refereed journals and help with the administration of the research group.

The post holder will have opportunity to voluntarily undertake limited teaching duties in joint agreement with the Department of Physics.  It is expected that the post holder will use the position to develop their track record and research independence.

You will have:

  • A PhD (for appointment at Research Associate level) or be about to obtain a PhD (for appointment at Research Assistant level) or equivalent level of professional qualifications
  • Experience in the field of laser plasma acceleration, or other high intensity laser-matter interactions.
  • Experience in modelling and developing plasma targetry
  • Experience operating and developing laser and plasma diagnostics
  • A strong background in accelerator, plasma or laser physics
  • Research experience of beam or plasma diagnostics
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out original research and to produce scientific research papers

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
