The Brunel Innovation Centre (BIC) is a university research centre located at TWI’s facilities in Cambridge. BIC has been created to carry out research and development in the field of Sensors and Instrumentation and associated technologies such as asset reliability, numerical modelling and risk management. BIC has the following objectives:

  • Create a shared research and technology capability between Brunel University and TWI Ltd,
  • Undertake joint research programmes,
  • Secure a portfolio of research funding from external sponsors,
  • Develop the next generation of technologies and engineers.

BIC has secured funding from the European Commission and InnovateUK to work with companies across Europe in the energy,  aerospace and construction & engineering  sectors.

We are seeking to recruit a Team Leader to lead, develop and grow the R&D activities in Power Ultrasonic team. The Team Leader will have experience and a sound knowledge in the following technologies and instrumentation (including operational software):

  • Ultrasonic wave propagation in structures
  • Modelling of ultrasonic wave propagation
  • Sensor, electronics and hardware integration
  • Laboratory and field trials of ultrasonic cleaning and antifouling technologies
  • Signal processing of ultrasonic sensor data for fouling detection and for wave propagation

The responsibilities and duties of the Team Leader include:

  • To assist the Technical Manager in monitoring and delivering PUT projects within the time and budgets provided
  • Responsible for publishing high quality research papers
  • To work with BIC director and technical manager to identify new opportunities and increase revenue for the centre
  • To assist in project negotiations and ensure successful kick-off and delivery of projects
  • To mentor students and supervise research staff in MCA team
  • To oversee and contribute to collaborative proposal writing (e.g. InnovateUK and EC H2020)
  • To assist in writing publicity material for BIC including press releases, website materials, newsletters, outreach materials and annual reports.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Evidence of sufficient knowledge in the above mentioned discipline and of research methods.
  • A relevant PhD degree or equivalent in engineering, computer science or physical sciences with experience in both software and aspects of instrumentation is desirable.
  • Experience managing and delivering InnovateUK and H2020 research projects
  • Proven track record of winning research grants by supporting proposal writing and providing novel ideas for new projects (e.g. InnovateUK and EC H2020)
  • Experience in mentoring students and supervising research staff
  • Good communication and presentation skills and the ability to draft research papers for publication in academic journals and/or combination of industrial experience and/or training.
  • A high level of initiative and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Ability to motivate and lead team.
  • Excellent analytical capability, with an interest in demonstrating technology in industrial applications.
