The GOdogs project ( investigates the genetics of obesity in dogs to learn about dog and human biology. We take a multidisciplinary approach that combines careful phenotyping of obesity with large scale genetic studies, molecular biology and systematic tests of eating behaviour and physiology, aiming to understand the mechanisms by which genes link to obesity.

We wish to appoint a research assistant to work on testing the consequences of genetic variation on eating behaviour and physiology. You will work with client-owned pet dogs to make quantitative measurements of eating behaviour, energy expenditure and blood pressure. The role involves both implementing existing protocols and designing and optimising new experiments. In parallel, the appointee will be responsible for supporting volunteer recruitment, managing data and recording DNA samples and data taken as part of the broader research.  

You will have a BSc and/or postgraduate degree in animal behaviour or animal sciences, or a veterinary clinical qualification. The successful candidate must have experience working with dogs and an interest in and/or experience of researching animal behaviour. Candidates with qualifications in animal behaviour or physiology are particularly welcome to apply, as are veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses. Excellent communication skills are essential for working with volunteer owners and scientific collaborators. Experience managing scientific projects is desirable. Strong administration skills and a diligent attitude to record keeping are essential.

The project is based at the Institute of Metabolic Science ( but you will also work at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and on visits to owners or external events. This is a full time post but requests for part time working may be considered. 

Proposed start date: 1st May 2018 or soon thereafter.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months.
