Fully Funded MSc by Research Scholarship: Formal Modelling and Analysis of Real Time Systems

Swansea University - Theoretical Computer Science

Swansea Science Doctoral Training Centre Scholarship: MSc by Research in Theoretical Computer Science

Start date: 1 July 2018

Project supervisors:
Supervisor 1 Prof Markus Roggenbach (Swansea, UK)
Supervisor 2 Dr Phillip James (Swansea, UK)

Project description:
This project is suitable for candidates interested in Formal Methods and working together with an industrial company.

The ERTMS Train Control System is a state-of-the-art system designed as a standard for railways across Europe. While the ERTMS standard details the interactions between trains and track equipment (e.g., in order to obtain concise train position information) and a radio block centre and trains (e.g., to hand out movement authorities), the details of how the controller, the interlocking and the radio block centre interact with each other are left to the suppliers of signalling solutions.

ERTMS is a hybrid system, i.e., system evolution involves discrete as well as continuous steps. Such systems can be modelled and analysed within the Uppaal framework, see http://www.uppaal.org

In close collaboration with Siemens Rail Automation, Chippenham, UK, the successful candidate shall develop and analyse a model of ERTMS in UPPAAL. The main focus of the project will be on safety properties such as “no two trains will ever collide”. Questions of capacity, i.e., how many trains can operate within a rail network within a given time frame, shall be addressed as well.

Academic requirements:
Candidates must have a first or an upper second class honours BSc degree in Computer Science or in a relevant discipline. Good knowledge in Formal Methods and / or Theoretical Computer Science are required.

For candidates whose first language is not English, we require IELTS 6.5 (with 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. Please visit our website for a list of acceptable English language tests.

Residency criteria:
Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is open to UK/EU candidates only.

Additional Funding Information
This one year scholarship covers the full cost of UK/EU tuition fees and includes a living allowance of £10,000.
