EPSRC Prosperity Partnership: Tailored Electromagnetic & Acoustic Materials Accelerator (TEAM-A)

The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Euan Hendry. This post is available immediately for a period of 3 years. The successful applicant will join TEAM-A: The tailored electromagnetic and acoustic materials accelerator, an EPSRC Prosperity Partnership programme. The aim of this partnership, which builds upon the successful relationship that exists between the University of Exeter and QinetiQ, is to develop advanced materials that can be used to control and manipulate the propagation of electromagnetic and acoustic energy, in a highly tailored, bespoke fashion, and develop innovative techniques for their cost-effective manufacture.

The post will focus on two aspects:

1) The design and implementation of novel, real time imaging systems for THz radiation based on time domain spectroscopy techniques.

2) The measurement and characterisation of new contrast materials in the THz band, with a view to applications of non-visible, covert identification markers.

The research will include aspects of optical set-up design, development and implementation of read-out electronics, control programming and software design, as well material characterisation and measurement.

About you

You will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.  At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, you will be a nationally recognised authority in ultrafast laser measurement, preferably with a background in THz time domain spectroscopy or imaging, and will be skilled in the design and assembly of THz measurement systems and/or optical setups. You will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

You will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual can bring to the role. You should demonstrate your achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.

Due to the nature of the work that QinetiQ is involved with, applicants will be expected to get security clearance.  For this reason, we have limited our applications to UK nationals who have resided in the UK for at least the past 5 years.
