College Teaching Associate in Learning and Writing Skills

University of Cambridge - Sidney Sussex College

Sidney Sussex College seeks to appoint a College Teaching Associate, to help build our students’ learning and writing skills through a combination of one-to-one mentoring and group work, with a particular emphasis on developing transition skills for first year undergraduates. The role provides a stimulating teaching experience in a supportive collegiate environment. It will enable the Associate to enjoy the company and encouragement of a lively and multidisciplinary academic Fellowship.

Most applicants will have professional experience in one or more of these areas: learning support, teaching English as a foreign language, writing skills; other applicant profiles will also be considered.  It is unlikely that a successful candidate would have a current affiliation to another College in the University.

The Associate will report to the Senior Tutor, and teach for between four and six hours a week during the teaching terms (the full eight weeks of the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, and the first four weeks of the Easter Term): this amounts to between 80 and 120 hours of contact time. Any teaching in excess of 120 hours shall be agreed in advance between the Associate and the Senior Tutor.

The Associate’s teaching will be recorded and claimed for via the University’s supervision feedback system. It is directly remunerated at the standard one-hour supervision rate for the relevant group size (currently £28.71 for a one-on-one supervision, rising to £43.68 for groups of six students or above). In addition, the post attracts a yearly Responsibility Allowance varying with the volume of teaching done, and with length of tenure. The total first year’s annual income from the Associateship will range between approximately £2,900 (for 80 hours of 1-2-1 contact time) and £5,800 (for 120 hours of group work with six or more students in attendance). In addition to the stipend, the Associate will benefit from the availability of shared office space, IT support, daily meals, and formal dining.

The Associateship may be renewed by mutual agreement at the end of the postholder’s full first academic year; from the time of such a renewal, the College would whenever possible provide the holder with 6 months’ notice before terminating the arrangement.

Applications must be submitted to by Friday 23rd March 2018, using the Application Form downloadable from Applicants should note that if shortlisted, they may be invited to attend an interview at the College the following week.

Sidney Sussex is an equal opportunity employer.
