Principal IT Support Technician

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

We are looking for an experienced IT Technician to join the Information and Computing Services Group (ICS) based at the Department's main site in Trumpington Street. You will be part of a team delivering IT services for teaching and research in the Mechanics, Materials and Design Division. This is an ideal opportunity for an individual seeking a position where they will be exposed to a wide range of technologies in a busy and dynamic environment, who enjoy interacting with customers and progressing their technical skills. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of experience in a number of areas and have a willingness to develop expertise across the full range of skills required. Training will be provided to meet the requirements of the post.

The ICS group is made up of more than 30 staff with expertise in networking, windows and linux systems, messaging, storage, printing and software development. In addition to the central Support and Infrastructure teams ICS has dedicated IT staff embedded in academic divisions across the Department. As a Principal IT Support Technician embedded in the Mechanics, Materials and Design Division you will be working closely with academics and IT colleagues to deliver IT solutions, support infrastructure and applications, and improve IT services. Specific requirements vary across research groups so this role requires a broad understanding of IT but may be expected to specialise in particular areas.

ICS provides a unified departmental service with flexibility to meet the Department's evolving strategic and operational needs. Staff are assigned a core role based on a particular technical, divisional, service or geographic area but this focus changes with changing demand. Staff work together in teams to deliver projects and services, with team members being drawn from any part of the ICS to provide the best team for the work.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
