Principal Technical Officer - Electrical, Communications & Electronic Engineering

Salary: £27,285 to £29,799 per annum with the potential to progress to £32,548 per annum on achieving designated skills and experience

Grade: UH6

FTE: Full time, working 37 hours per week (1.0 fte)

Main duties & responsibilities

  1. To acquire and maintain an in-depth understanding of the function and operation of the equipment in the relevant laboratories.
  2. Experience of embedded software development using C in such environments as Arduino, mplabX or mbed to develop, test and assist students with their projects.
  3. A general knowledge of RF technologies such as Bluetooth, wireless and different modulation techniques across a broad spectrum from low frequency to Giga hertz.
  4. Experience of using circuit simulation software and basic PCB layout tools.
  5. An appreciation of software defined radio and its applications
  6. Basic networking skills and an understanding of TCP/IP protocols.
  7. Knowledge of basic computer skills to be able to diagnose networking and software/hardware related issues
  8. Use of test equipment such as signal generators, oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers to assist in demonstrating to students and ensure that checks are undertaken to confirm the serviceability of equipment, undertaking or arranging repairs if possible, and reporting unrepairable faults to the Technical Manager and the Head of Division.

  • A client oriented approach to work.
  • Ability to manage a small team of technical staff, including appraisal and work allocation and monitoring
  • Demonstration and training skills
  • A commitment to supporting students in order to work safely and effectively with a wide range of equipment

Qualifications required

  • A recognized qualification in an appropriate subject at degree or HNC/HND level or equivalent.
  • Good standard of general education to A Level standard, including good level of numeracy.
