Head of Department – Engineering Design and Mathematics

University of the West of England, Bristol – Faculty of Environment and Technology

We have an exciting opportunity to lead the Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics – a department consisting of the following disciplines:

  • - Mechanical and Automotive Engineering and Engineering Management
  • - Aerospace
  • - Electronics and Robotics (including the Bristol Robotics Laboratory – a joint initiative with Bristol University)
  • - Mathematics

The Department is about to undergo a period of significant development of our Engineering provision, including the move to a brand new purpose built facility on site at our Frenchay campus and we are looking for the right candidate to lead us through this period of change. Engineering and Mathematics are creative and innovative subjects which can be harnessed to improve the world around us and our research and teaching is embedded in real world problems with relevance to the local, national and international economy. Our focus is on the satisfaction of our students and their employability once they leave our university.

Consequently we are keen to engage the public in our enthusiasm for engineering, design and mathematical subjects. Our staff and students demonstrate creativity and innovation at many regional festivals, while our outreach function develops a network of partnerships with local schools and colleges which helps raise aspirations for the future.

To do this we are looking for a confident Engineer with a vision around pedagogy and enterprise, who can engage both with staff internally and with the many major engineering businesses in the local area (BAE Systems, GKN, Airbus, Rolls Royce and their supply chain companies for example) – thereby helping us to capitalise on the many significant opportunities both locally and internationally with our growing partnerships abroad, particularly in the Middle East.

We also need a champion who will connect with, and help build on the excellence of our Bristol Robotics Laboratory - a unique collaboration that harnesses the collective strengths of both UWE and Bristol University, bringing together the best expertise from industry and the academic community to spearhead Britain’s efforts to be a world leader in modern advanced robotics.

Interviews will be held on Tuesday 24th April 2018.
