Postdoctoral Fellowship - Integrated Structural Biology of type VII secretion systems

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Contract Duration: 2 years

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

The research group of Matthias Wilmanns has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes that are of medical relevance. Most of our projects require the combined use of different structural biology methods by combined and integrative approaches, generally followed by functional experiments.

Project Outline:
To understand bacterial pathogenicity, it is crucial to acquire structural and functional knowledge about the protein machineries that allow translocation of virulence factors across the bacterial membrane. Building on previous work of our research group (Beckham et al. Nature Microbiology, 2017) we are aiming for high-resolution structural information of type VII secretion systems from mycobacteria. To achieve this goal, we use integrative structural biology, including X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, crosslinking and computational approaches. Our ultimate goal is to provide a structural basis of these systems at sufficient resolution to design targeted mutations for in-depth understanding of their function. This work will provide the foundations to explore the potential of type VII secretion systems as novel drug targets.

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, a proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition, excellent communication skills, and previously demonstrated expertise in structural biology and biophysical approaches including sample preparation (molecular biology, protein purification). Additional expertise in microbiology, protein biochemistry, or mass spectrometry would be advantageous.
