Post-Doctoral Researcher in Rumen Metabolism of Dairy Cows

Harper Adams University is looking for a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher interested in improving rumen metabolism to enhance dairy cow performance and health, whilst reducing their environmental impact.   

This position is funded through a University Alliance between Alltech and Harper Adams University. Dairy cow research facilities at Harper Adams University include a newly developed dairy cow metabolism unit and a 400 cow dairy unit with the ability to record the individual intake of 60 dairy cows. A comprehensive range of recently extended laboratory facilities that include ICP-MS, GC, molecular biology, proximate analysis and in vitro rumen metabolism facilities support the animal resources. Access to an extensive suite of molecular laboratories at Alltech is also available.

The Main Duties and Responsibilities include:

As a member of a research team, under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the sponsoring company (Alltech) you will:

  • Take responsibility for planning and conducting an experimental program of research on manipulating rumen fermentation in dairy cows
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of future research programs 
  • Undertake associated laboratory analysis, and develop new techniques as required 
  • Present regular updates to members of the research Alliance 
  • Make conference presentations and write papers as agreed with the PI, and provide briefings and talks to industry 
  • Manage the day to day routine of technicians, undergraduates and post-graduates involved with the research
  • Provide advice and assistance for research students and undergraduates as required
