PhD Studentship: Creating a Miniaturised Blood Analysis System

Modern diagnostic systems rely on handling and analysing blood samples to detect a vast range of diseases. However, such systems are usually large and expensive. Our goal is to push the state of the art to create new miniature lab-on-a-chip technologies that will revolutionise healthcare by creating smaller, cheaper systems that can be distributed into homes, doctors’ surgeries and remote rural communities.

In this project, you will explore how acoustic levitation can be used to control the position of cells in blood samples, and combining it with cutting edge imaging technologies to for prototype systems. Applications will include devices for detecting malaria, extracting immune cells for allergy testing and looking for bacteria hidden within cells.

The project is a collaboration with Leica microsystems, and part of the project will be to work closely with the company in order to benefit from their expertise in diagnostic systems and to direct the research to applications that will truly have impact on the well-being and health of people around the world.

The project will require you to acquire skills in a wide range of areas: microfluidic design, imaging, electronics, ultrasound and programming. A background in some of these would be ideal, but we can provide training to support whatever experience you bring. We are looking for an exceptional candidate who is able to learn additional skills as necessary.
