The York Cross-disciplinary Centre for Systems Analysis (YCCSA) provides an inspiring cross-disciplinary research environment, bringing together a critical mass of ~80 resident researchers and visitors from Departments including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Environment, Mathematics, and Physics. YCCSA is housed in purpose-built facilities, demonstrating York's commitment to promoting Working Together across disciplines.

This research involves staff from the Departments of Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, and Chemistry.  You will formally be a member of YCCSA and the Computer Science Department.

Role
Your role will be a post-doctoral research assistant on the EPSRC-funded SpInspired research project.  This involves developing a novel methodology for evaluating and using unconventional substrates as computational systems.  You will design and perform computational hardware experiments, evaluate results, document your findings in technical reports and academic papers, and present results at conferences.  You will be involved in the co-supervision of two accompanying PhD students, and in helping to organise and run cross-disciplinary workshops.

Skills, Experience & Qualification 

You will be an experienced researcher, with a PhD, or equivalent research experience, in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or similar technical area

  • You will have experience of designing, running, and analysing computational hardware experiments
  • You will have experience of writing academic papers in a timely manner, and of presenting results at international conferences

You will have knowledge of hardware implementations of unconventional computational devices

  • Ideally, you will have experience of implementing of unconventional computational devices in unconventional hardware substrates

You will be comfortable working in a cross-disciplinary team, both in following guidance from others and providing your own input and ideas, and will have a strong commitment to cross-disciplinary working
