Fully Funded EPSRC PhD Scholarship: Scale-up of atomically-controlled nanoparticles for applications in physics, chemistry and biology

The generation of nanoparticles by the condensation of atoms inside a vacuum system is a clean, green way to manufacture these basic components of nanotechnology. But to date the application of precision nanoparticles produced this way have been restricted by the limited intensity available. Two PhD students are required to commission and exploit a next-generation "Matrix Assembly Cluster Source (MACS)" that is able to scale-up the production rate by at least 5 orders of magnitude. The deposition of the clusters will enable the preparation of a new generation of catalysts for renewable energy research (e.g. hydrogen fuel cells), of label-free biochips for cancer diagnosis and exciton-coupled photonic devices for light harvesting, switching etc. Aberration-corrected electron microscopy is central to the characterisation of the nanoparticles.


Academic requirements:

Candidates must have a minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry, materials or engineering discipline.

The candidate will need to be very able, well-motivated and keen to engage with the international science and engineering community via numerous collaborations.
