Building Maintenance and Coordination Officer

Contract Duration: 5 years (can be extended up to 9 years)

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain).

The EMBL Epigenetics and Neurobiology Unit in Monterotondo (near Rome, Italy) is an integrated biological laboratory hosting some 100-120 personnel, in a 3000 m2 faculty building. We are seeking to hire an experienced building maintenance and coordination officer to coordinate/oversee all building related activities before and during the refurbishment of the building which is planned to occur in the next 36 months, in collaboration with the architectural team, the project manager team and Headquarters Facility Management with the aim of ensuring the success of the renovation and the continuity of the Laboratory’s ongoing scientific activities.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include:
• Liaison with the technical teams, Headquarters and staff during the preparatory phase of the refurbishment works on issues related to the executive project to be submitted for tender
• Plan and coordinate the move of personnel during the refurbishment phases
• Manage the upkeep of equipment and supplies to maintain full operationality of the Unit’s activities
• Inspect buildings’ structures to determine the need for repairs or renovations
• Supervise where necessary, facilities and general services staff (technicians, external contractors)

Qualifications and Experience

• Proven experience as building maintenance officer or relevant position
• Well-versed in technical/engineering operations and facilities management best practices
• Experience in the operation of biological laboratories
• Experience in the refurbishment of biological research institutes would be an advantage
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Working knowledge of English and Italian
• Excellent organizational and leadership skills
• Good analytical/critical thinking
• BSc/BA in facility management, engineering, business administration or relevant field
• Relevant professional qualification (e.g. CFM) will be an advantage
