The Photon Science Institute (PSI) is a multi-disciplinary research centre in which physicists, chemists, engineers and material scientists use light to enable science as well as to develop new ways of generating, manipulating and detecting it. We are based in a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility and benefit from a comprehensive suite of laser sources covering a wide range of wavelengths, energies and pulse durations. The PSI houses a number of research facilities and centres which includes the EPSRC National EPR Service and the Henry Royce Institute.

The Technical Services Manager will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of the technical services functions within the PSI. They will have overall responsibility for ensuring the Institute’s state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities support the requirements of our world-class researchers and will play an important role in the timeliness and success of experiments. You will manage a team of staff in a professional and collaborative manner and will be expected to develop effective partnerships with staff and students from across the University, as well as with researchers from other institutions, industrial partners and commercial customers.

You will have a degree, or a relevant equivalent qualification, in a physical sciences or engineering discipline and significant experience of undertaking a similar technical role within a research-focused organisation of a similar size and complexity. Demonstrable experience of working with, or managing, equipment used for ultrafast laser science and/or in the area of advanced materials research is required. You will have strong people leadership and management skills and the ability to influence and motivate teams in a demanding working environment and during periods of change. We are seeking a highly motivated individual who can think strategically and solve operational problems through the use of initiative and innovation.
