Full Time, Fixed Term - Academic

The Department of Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes University, wishes to appoint a Lecturer in the Anthropology of Japan who will also have significant expertise in general anthropology. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the anthropology of Japan and general anthropology, including lecturing, examining, academic guidance of students, and assistance with the administration and organisation of teaching and research.

Applicants should have a doctorate completed or very near to completion in the anthropology of Japan. Applicants need evidence of the following: excellence in teaching, a good track record as an active researcher commensurate with current career stage, and a good record of collaboration and team-work.

The Lecturer in the Anthropology of Japan will be responsible for:

  • Teaching students using appropriate instruction methods, and setting and assessing students' work
  • Leading the following modules: U20105 Introduction to Japanese Society and Culture;U20125 Japan at Play
  • Contributing to the teaching and marking for other anthropology modules including the following: U20171 Minorities and Marginality in Contemporary Japan; U20149 Reading Contemporary Ethnography; U20104 Introduction to Social Anthropology,
  • Supervising and assessing students' projects and dissertations
  • Contributing to curriculum development work including planning, development, evaluation and updating of courses and course materials
  • Caring for the pastoral needs of students including counselling, welfare, and guidance

To apply for the Lecturer in the Anthropology of Japan you should have:

  • PhD in Anthropology, with a focus on contemporary Japan, or be near completion
  • Research experience and expertise in the Anthropology of Japan
  • A good record of recent research and publication, commensurate with career stage
  • Ability to lead modules in the Anthropology of Japan
  • Ability to teach Anthropology at undergraduate level
  • Ability to work both in a team and independently
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
