PhD Studentship: Multi-disciplinary Design Optimisation of Cellular Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers are used widely throughout the automotive, marine and aerospace sectors and are traditionally designed as an assembly of fins and tubes. Modern additive manufacturing processes, however, enable complex internal cooling passages to be manufactured with relative ease. Such structures can be optimised for a variety of performance parameters above and beyond basic heat transfer. 

The following PhD studentship is in collaboration with Vestas Aircoil and will aim to explore the multi-disciplinary performance of novel cellular heat exchanger topologies within an automated design framework. Specific focus of this studentship will be on fluid dynamics simulation and the development of a generic framework within which other performance criteria e.g. stresses, vibration response, life can be assessed and optimised. 

The successful candidate should have a 1st class engineering or applied mathematics degree (or equivalent), ideally with experience in computational fluid dynamics, computer aided design and experience of programming in Matlab, Python or similar. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work directly with Vestas during an industrial placement as part of their studies.
