Postdoctoral Research Fellow

The University of Edinburgh - Centre for Genomic & Experimental Medicine

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work within the Centre for Genomic & Experimental Medicine, IGMM, at the University of Edinburgh as part of a large translational research programme assessing lentiviral gene transfer to the lungs. The postholder will conduct studies as part of a collaborative programme of work aimed at exploiting a lentiviral vector platform, uniquely engineered for lung gene transfer, for a portfolio of diseases where there is scope for expression of therapeutic transgenes through delivery of vectors to the lung. The specific aim will be to develop antifibrotic gene therapy strategies for pulmonary fibrosis and related conditions. The postholder will also be expected to contribute to other collaborative aspects of the programme.

The research team belongs to the UK CF Gene Therapy Consortium (GTC), the largest group world-wide conducting translational research in respiratory gene therapy. GTC members in Imperial College London and the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford have completed one Phase IIb and six Phase I/IIa non-viral gene therapy trials. The Phase IIb trial established, for the first time, that gene therapy can stabilise cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease. Excitingly the GTC has also developed a lentiviral vector and is currently preparing for a first-in-man lentivirus clinical trial in CF patients.

This new project will bring together both the translational science and the teams’ expertise in evaluating new therapeutics in clinical trials for the treatment of other lung conditions.

The post is fixed term for 4 years.
