Job Summary

We are currently seeking two Science Portfolio Advisers to join the Cellular & Developmental Science team and Clinical and Physiological Science team, respectively. This is an exciting opportunity where the appointed individuals will contribute to the implementation of the Wellcome Trust Science Division Strategy, including support of research in relevant scientific areas. 

The Science Portfolio Adviser will be part of a small team, working flexibly on a variety of tasks according to the agreed work plan for the department.

About the Job

To succeed in this role, you will

  • Keep abreast of the relevant scientific field(s), including the funding and policy landscape
  • Develop and implement new initiatives
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to the assessment, development and implementation of strategies and project management plans for new partnerships or activities
  • Work across the Science Division and across Wellcome to achieve strategic objectives
  • Monitor project progress and outcomes
  • Work with other teams and other departments to ensure effective review of grant applications
  • Liaising with other teams to ensure appropriate referee selection and to support Review Committees
  • Prepare and provide feedback to grant applicants
  • Ensure familiarity with grant applications and key awards in areas of responsibility
  • Contribute to the evaluation of funding activities
  • Prepare/draft papers and other documentation, including operational reporting
  • Organise and participate in ad hoc meetings and site visits; preparing minutes/notes
  • Participate in working groups, within the Science Division and across the Trust
  • Undertake their work in accordance with Wellcome policies and principles.
  • Undertaking any other work that may be reasonably required from time to time

Background / Experience

Essential

  • At least 2 years relevant post-graduate work experience or equivalent
  • At least one first-author primary research paper published (or accepted for publication) in a peer-reviewed journal or equivalent
  • Interest in range of scientific areas in addition to core discipline
  • Understanding of funding and scientific policy at strategic level
  • Experience of writing and submitting a grant proposal.

Desirable

  • Experience/knowledge of universities and institutions in the UK and other relevant scientific communities

Essential

  • Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively and confidently with individuals and groups
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Articulate with good presentation skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Strong writing skills; able to synthesize key points clearly and concisely
  • IT literate with experience of using database and other systems, including Microsoft Office
  • Able to multi-task and manage a fluctuating, sometimes heavy, workload

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • PhD in a relevant discipline
