Research Associate in Integrated Nanolaser Devices and Systems

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position funded by the Rising Star fellowship program1 and the Ser Cymru Chair in Advanced Materials and Devices2 associated with the Institute for Compound Semiconductors3 (ICS) at Cardiff University. The role will research and develop new nanolasers to specifically target topological insulator lasers in support of the Rising Star Fellowship and the Ser Cymru projects. The Ser Cymru research laboratory directed by Professor Huffaker includes >£4M equipment investment to include a well-equipped optoelectronics characterization laboratory, a new £500K quantum technology laboratory, two-interlocked molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) systems and one metal-organic chemical vapour deposition system (MOCVD). The group has full access to the ICS state-of-the art fabrication facilities. Several posts are currently available in epitaxial materials, quantum and optoelectronic devices.

The envisioned research targets innovative semiconductor laser device and system development enabled by compound semiconductor (III-V) nanostructures and metamaterials. Specific applications include photonic topological insulator lasers, quantum emitters and energy-efficient communication links with local, international and industrial collaborations.  

Several related positions in integration, optoelectronics and photonics are open in parallel to support the ICS and the larger Compound Semiconductor Cluster forming in Wales.

Qualifications and Experience 

Candidates will have a PhD in Engineering, Physics or closely-related subject with specialty in fabrication, characterization and integration of nanophotonic devices.  Individuals with knowledge of advanced topics including plasmonics, photonic crystals, metamaterials and III-V on Silicon integration are highly desired.  You will have a strong research record demonstrated through publications in high quality academic journals; experience participating in research proposals and research/industry-based groups with proven ability to network effectively with academics and outside academia.
