Head of Department of Psychology & Professor

Manchester Metropolitan University - Department of Psychology

Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the UK’s most inspiring higher education institutions, offering the opportunity for passionate and committed individuals to make a difference to the lives of people and communities locally, nationally, and internationally. The University has an exciting opportunity to join the forward-thinking Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care as a Professor of Psychology with an initial four-year tenure as Head of Department.

Psychology is a strong, growing, and energetic department with over 60 members of staff and 1,800 students. With an international research profile, and grants from the Medical Research Council and National Institute of Health Research, the Department has ambitious plans for developing areas of strength including health psychology, behaviour change, critical/community psychology, and forensic psychology. The cross disciplinary and applied focus provides a vibrant environment for students and staff. Partnerships with public and private organisations in Manchester and beyond support the knowledge exchange and impact agendas. The Department works in collaboration with diverse external groups including local councils, police and probation service, professional sports teams, blue chip businesses, pharmacology companies, smoking cessation services, and charities.

The Department is well placed to build on existing strengths and now seeks a Professor of Psychology with academic leadership responsibilities as Head of Department. You will be a world-leading psychology academic with the ambition and drive to lead the department into the next phase of development. Alongside an excellent record in peer-reviewed academic journals and strong record of grant funding, you will also have a commitment to supporting new and experienced staff in developing their own research profiles.

The successful candidate will develop and maintain the Department’s strong research culture, will have plans for generating significant funding through the submission of relevant bids, and will be able to ensure a steady pipeline of publications that achieve international recognition. At the same time, the incoming Head will actively develop new income streams by identifying opportunities for research, consultancy, knowledge exchange projects, short courses, and taught programmes.
