Research Associate in Crystal Plasticity Modelling of Electronic Solder Joint Performance

Full-Time, Fixed Term appointment until 31 March 2021

As part of a new UK project on the prediction and control of solder joint reliability in electronics, a research position is available on the crystal plasticity modelling of lead-free solders subject to thermo-mechanical and shock loading. The research involves the establishment of mechanistic crystal-level models for slip and failure (in conjunction with micro-mechanical experimentalists) and the development of solder bead structural models in order to design solder microstructures giving optimal performance for particular loading regimes. The project also includes working with colleagues utilising the models through to simulating solder arrays under in-service loading.

You will also be a conscientious, innovative scientist who has successfully completed or is about to obtain, a PhD (or equivalent) in materials science and engineering or equivalent (e.g. engineering or physics).

* Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
