Research Technician - De Renzis Group

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Contract Duration: 1 year (until 30.06.2019)
Grading: 4, 5 or 6 depending on experience and qualifications

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), Rome (Italy), and Barcelona (Spain). EMBL is seeking a research technician to join the De Renzis group in the Developmental Biology Unit. The aim of the group is to elucidate the cellular mechanisms underlying tissue morphogenesis using the Drosophila embryo as a model system.

This work requires experience with molecular biology; previous experience with Drosophila genetics and/or light microscopy imaging techniques would be desirable. Besides performing complex and time-demanding experiments (80% of the time) the research technician will also be responsible for general lab management (20% of the time). This includes ordering of reagents and general organization of the laboratory such as administration of several databases (plasmids, antibodies, fly collections).

The ideal candidate will be responsible for helping students and postdocs with molecular biology and introducing new lab members to the major techniques used in the lab. In addition he/she will be available to carry on several research projects independently that will need to be completed and submitted for publication by the end of the year.

Qualifications and Experience
Ideally candidates should be highly qualified and motivated individuals with an appropriate university degree (preferentially master degree) or technical school training in biological sciences, who can take significant responsibility for design and performing complex experiments.

Candidates with a broad range of expertise and working experience are particularly encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.
