Research Fellow in Electric Vehicle Control

University of Surrey - Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences

Fixed term contract until 31/10/2020.

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position starting as soon as possible, to explore the possibility of advanced optimal control for enhancing vehicle safety, handling and energy efficiency in electric quadricycle layouts characterised by multiple powertrains.

This post is part of an H2020 project that aims to develop new control systems for electric quadricycles with individually controlled motors. A budget for travel and other expenses will be provided, and there will be several opportunities to attend related conferences. The research will be carried out with industrial partners. The outcomes of the project will be evaluated on a fleet of state-of-the-art electric quadricycles.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in energy management, automotive control and vehicle dynamics, and should be a holder of a PhD degree in one of the areas of automotive engineering, mechanical engineering or control systems engineering. Also, experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

1. Electric vehicle energy management;

2. Vehicle dynamics simulation and control, torque-vectoring, anti-lock braking systems and traction control systems;

3. Advanced driver assistance systems.

The appointee will join the Centre for Automotive Engineering of the Mechanical Engineering Sciences Department, which has research interests in a wide range of topics including active vehicle dynamics, tyre dynamics, electric powertrains, vehicle aerodynamics and novel transmission systems for electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The research group owns a state-of-the-art Hardware-In-the-Loop drivetrain test rig that is unique in the UK.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the project coordinator, Prof Aldo Sorniotti (tel: +44 (0)1483 689688, e-mail a.sorniotti@surrey.ac.uk), for further information.
