Casual EAP Advisor/ESOL and English Language Support

University of Cumbria - Student & Staff Services

We are looking to recruit a bank of suitably qualified and experienced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Advisers to join the delivery team at our London Campus, University of Cumbria for an immediate start, to support students on our existing and new programmes. Applicants should also be able to deliver, if required, ESOL and English language tuition.

The multi-award winning University of Cumbria is a wonderful blend of old and new, founded on a rich educational history with institutions dating back more than 150 years. Having recently celebrated our 10th anniversary, we have a fast growing research reputation, increasing profile and place alongside national and international employers as well as multi-million-pound campus investments and exciting ambitions for the future.

The university has a long-standing tradition of attracting and supporting students with both traditional and non-traditional qualifications from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with academic, professional and life skills, and enabling them to succeed and thrive in higher education (HE) and their wider lives.

In this role as EAP Adviser, you will provide in-sessional support for English for Academic Purposes, as well as providing ESOL and general English language support where appropriate, to home and international students for whom English is their second language. Your primary role will be to work closely with tutors to put in place face to face, email or Skype support for students deemed by tutors as ‘at risk’ of failing. You will establish close working relationships with tutors to ensure this targeted work is effective. You role may also involve some delivery of group workshops, such as input into the induction programme, as well as the development of online content as relevant.

You will have studied to degree level and will have a relevant postgraduate teaching qualification (e.g. TEFL-Q diplomas such as DELTA, TESOL or a relevant PGCE) and/or Masters in TESOL or TEAP.

You will be confident in delivering group workshop sessions as well as individual advice and guidance tutorials and you will be a good communicator, adaptable and well organised. You will show sensitivity towards students’ social, cultural, linguistic, religious and ethnic backgrounds, and be committed to raising their educational achievement.

You will work as part of a wider delivery team, which includes Academic Skills, Admissions etc. You will be managed on a day-to-day basis by Rob Wilson, the London Campus Manager, with strategic steer and input from Student and Staff Services.
