European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Contract Duration: 3 years (contract is renewable)

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

EMBL is operating an Integrated Facility for Structural Biology at the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source at DESY, Hamburg. The core of the facility is formed by three X-ray beamlines that provide state-of-the-art conditions for X-ray crystallography and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments and a sample preparation facility. The facilities are open to the international scientific community and hundreds of users visit them every year.

The postholder will participate in the improvement of existing and the construction, testing and commissioning of new beamline instrumentation and experimental facilities. Tasks will range from the integration of single X-ray optical elements into the synchrotron beamline layout to the design and installation of entire instruments. (S)he will work in an international team of scientists, engineers and technicians and will support the scientists in finding technical solutions for complex experimental problems.

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a master degree (or equivalent) in precision mechanical engineering or physics engineering or mechatronics. They should have demonstrated experience in technical drawing with 3D CAD systems like Solid Edge or equivalent packages and expert FEA knowledge in particular about thermal and vibration problems preferably using ANSYS. Experience in scientific instrumentation involving precision-positioning technologies, vacuum or cryogenic systems, robotic or automation systems is also a plus. The candidate must have excellent communication skills to collaborate in an international and multidisciplinary team. The working language is English.
