Technician

University of Nottingham - Biosciences

Applications are invited for the above post based within the School of Biosciences at the Sutton Bonington Campus.

The post holder will support the local Technical Team Leader by providing high quality technical assistance in support of the School’s teaching & research activities within the South Laboratory building. 

This post will oversee the day to day running of several laboratories & provide high quality technical support for several research groups within the Crop Sciences areas of the School.

Duties will include the following, however full details can be found in the job description:

  • Providing technical support in the following key techniques: molecular biology & PCR, tissue culture, microscopy & image analysis.
  • Provide one to one training to all lab users in use of lab equipment – including Li-Cor, WinRhizo and spectrophotometer
  • Providing supervision & training for undergraduate, MSc & postgraduate research students in use of equipment & techniques.
  • Ensuring stocks & equipment in own areas of responsibility are maintained & available for use.
  • Maintaining a safe working environment in accordance with statutory & University Health & Safety procedures.

Candidates must have an HNC in a relevant subject or equivalent qualifications plus considerable relevant technical/scientific experience or substantial work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.

Candidates should also have a good knowledge of biology (Plant/Crop sciences would be desirable) and proven technical and/or experimental expertise in the areas of molecular biology, microscopy & image analysis. Experience growing plants in controlled environments & seed sterilisation and plating would be desirable.

A good understanding of Health & Safety regulations and procedures and the implications of non-compliance on other staff is essential and an understanding of ACGM regulations in relation to working with GM plants would be desirable.

The successful candidate must possess a commitment to providing a high quality practical learning experience to all students within the School.
