Research Associate in Carbon Nitride-based Nanomaterials

University College London - UCL Chemistry

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 - £41,864 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work jointly with Professor PF McMillan and Dr CA Howard in the Departments of Chemistry and Physics & Astronomy at UCL. The project is funded by the European Union via the Graphene Flagship Core 2 programme to develop functionalised graphene-like materials for fuel cells and related energy conversion and storage applications leading to commercial devices. The work will involve fundamental and applied research into the design, synthesis, testing and scaled-up production of layered graphene-related materials (GRM) for electrochemical and energy-related applications.

The postholder will carry out research into the synthesis, functionalisation and characterisation of the catalysts and support materials. They will carry out structural studies using laboratory and synchrotron X-ray or neutron scattering techniques and will investigate electrochemical properties relevant to fuel cell catalyst devices and operations.

Start date will be by negotiation and the appointment is funded for a period of 12 months initially.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in experimental physical sciences including demonstrated experience with chemical synthesis and structural-physical properties characterisation of functionalised GRM nanomaterials and related layered solids. They must also demonstrate experience with electrochemical characterisation and data analysis for the new materials. They must hold a PhD (or be about to be awarded a PhD) in Materials Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or a related discipline.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6 (salary £30,316 - £31,967 per annum, including London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
