About the role

Based at STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, you will provide a crucial communications resource for the laboratory in developing and disseminating content across a range of channels, both traditional and digital. You will be part of a small lab-based team and will work with embedded communications colleagues in science departments, as well as with the wider STFC and UKRI communications community. In addition to the content focus, you will be expected to assist with other communications duties from time to time, including VIP visits. You must be able to work to very high standards with minimal supervision.

Specific duties:

  • Source, write and/or commission high quality content including news stories, features, case studies and speeches/presentations that are tailored to specific audiences and generated from a range of sources including scientific publications, interviews with science and technology staff and collaborators, commercial partners, internal and external events and other written material (50%)
  • Provide communications advice and support to lab-based staff and management and external partners including the Harwell Campus community, business, academics and the wider UKRI community (20%)
  • Produce high quality audio-visual material, including info graphics, video and pictorial material, for a variety of channels (20%)
  • Provide media liaison services at the Laboratory as required (5%)
  • Contribute to STFC’s events planning and delivery as necessary (5%).

About you       

A degree in physics or related subject, or in journalism or related subject is essential.

You will have excellent writing skills and demonstrated experience in producing news, features, presentations and speeches, to tight deadlines.

You must have significant experience working in a science or technology environment, preferably in the public sector.

It is essential that you have project management and social media expertise.

Experience working in media liaison and broadcast or print journalism is preferred but not essential.

It would be beneficial to have knowledge of STFC science.
