Assistant Professor in 18th and/or 19th Century Literature

Durham University

The role:

Based in our prestigious English department which is consistently rated to be one of the best in the UK, this enticing role combines the dual strands of teaching with research. Supporting our endeavours to maintain our international reputation for producing world-leading research outputs, you will develop research projects, and develop teaching modules relating to Eighteenth and/or Nineteenth Century Literature in English. Focusing on genres such as poetry and drama, your work will predominantly concentrate on England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, but research that highlights dialogue between this writing and the writing of other countries would also be relevant. Working to further the knowledge of undergraduate and MA students, you will assess their work and impart your knowledge in creative ways across tutorials, seminars and lectures. You will also be tasked with supervising PhD students, and leading research groups.

You’ll need:

  • A good first degree with a PhD in English (or a related subject).
  • Evidence of world-class research (or the potential to achieve this) in Eighteenth and/or Nineteenth century literature in English, and the enthusiasm to pursue research projects that complement the strengths of the department.
  • The confidence to teach students at all levels and in groups of varying sizes, and provide a high standard of assessment.
  • The commitment to attract and supervise PhD students, including their dissertations.
  • A comprehensive research plan, with the channels to successfully apply for funding and evidence of research impact beyond your institution.
  • Excellent teaching skills, with the creativity to tailor and deliver interesting seminars and lectures with the ability to attain fellowship of the HEA.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the willingness to contribute to collegial and administrative activities as required.

Candidates who would like to apply for the position as a grade 7 post aren’t expected to fulfil all the above criteria, but you are encouraged to apply for this role if you feel you have the potential to achieve these standards.
