In order to for us to stay in touch with both the latest developments and customers' changing needs jobs.ac.uk have established a programme of research. The key aims of our research programme are to ensure that our service provides customers with what they need, and also to investigate how we can continually improve our site to ensure that it remains relevant, useful and navigable for our jobseekers.

Usability Report

'How to make your recruitment website more effective'

In early 2008 we commissioned two experienced usability consultants to examine the effectiveness of 50 university websites and to write a report based on their findings, including best practice recommendations.

Our aim in doing this was to help Higher Education Institutions discover not only what improvements they could make to their recruitment sites, but also exactly how to make them. Ultimately, we wanted to help institutions improve the experience of users coming to their websites.

Effectiveness survey

Independent research from 10 universities shows that jobs.ac.uk is the most effective recruitment media for university appointments.

For the third year, jobs.ac.uk has invited Universities to share their recruitment data to present a snapshot of recruitment effectiveness. This year as in 2005 jobs.ac.uk was shown to be over four times more effective than The Guardian, THES, Nature, New Scientist and all other print sources combined in appointing candidates for research and academic posts.

Survey highlights:

  • Online recruitment was responsible for 69% of university appointments
  • Press Combined (National & Local Press and journals combined) accounted for only 21% of university appointments
  • jobs.ac.uk, was more effective at recruiting and appointing candidates for academic, research and managerial posts than any other online recruitment site, accounting for 15% of all appointed personnel.
