Deans of Faculty Jobs
University of Auckland, New Zealand
The University of Auckland is New Zealand's leading university and one of the Asia-Pacific region's most internationally connected institutions. We are ambitious in our scholarship, confident in our public role, and deeply committed to helping shape the future of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our aspiration is not simply to participate in that future, but to help create it through outstanding research, transformative education, and meaningful partnerships with communities, iwi, industry, government, and leading institutions around the world. As a comprehensive research-intensive university, we seek to combine global excellence with a deep commitment to the society we serve.
We believe that excellence and relevance are mutually reinforcing. The University's ambition is not growth for its own sake, but distinction: pursuing excellence in the areas where we can make our greatest contribution and achieve international impact. We value originality, intellectual ambition, creativity, and scholarly rigour. We seek to foster a culture in which quality matters more than volume, where important ideas are pursued with courage, and where research is judged not only by what is produced, but by the difference it makes. Our goal is to strengthen New Zealand's research capability, contribute to economic and social development, advance human understanding, and help address the major challenges facing our nation and our world.
In an increasingly complex and polarised environment, we see universities as playing a vital civic role. The University of Auckland is committed to being a trusted source of evidence, insight, and informed debate. We believe universities should help societies think more clearly rather than tell them what to think. Through academic freedom, intellectual diversity, and robust inquiry, we seek to create an environment in which difficult questions can be explored openly and rigorously. We aspire to use the University's convening power to bring together scholars, communities, industries, policymakers, and international thought leaders to engage constructively with the defining issues of our time and strengthen the public trust on which great universities depend.
The future of the University will be shaped by the people we attract, develop, and support. We are committed to creating an environment in which talented academics can pursue ambitious careers, particularly those at the beginning of their academic journey.
We believe that leadership is measured not only by personal achievement, but by the opportunities created for others through mentorship, sponsorship, collaboration, and the development of future leaders.
Following Professor Sarah Young’s move from Dean of Science to become Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, and the retirement of our former Dean of Arts & Education, we are now seeking Deans who can build cultures of excellence, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, champion outstanding teaching and research, and help position the University as a globally respected institution that remains deeply connected to New Zealand and its aspirations.
This is an opportunity to help lead a university that stands for something larger than itself: the pursuit of truth, the development of human capability, and the belief that universities matter most when they help societies think clearly, act wisely, and imagine boldly.
