Our School of Health & Social Care

Edinburgh Napier University’s School of Health and Social Care is a vibrant academic community with over 120 colleagues, all committed to the delivery of outstanding quality research and education with impact. We are structured into four key subject disciplines, Nursing, Midwifery, Allied Health & Social Work and Health & Social Care Sciences, whilst embracing interprofessional and interdisciplinary working. We are realising our ambition to recruit, retain and develop the best staff, who are pivotal to our continual drive for excellence in our world-leading education and research. Our education and research strategies are synergistic, one informs the other. This enables us to work across and within our subject groups, to push forward the boundaries of academic practice, to research with impact and to maximise knowledge exchange. We are one of the largest providers of midwifery and nursing education in Scotland and we have an international reputation for excellence in these disciplines developed through highly successful transnational education partnerships. We also have an innovative, integrated pre-registration Post-Graduate programme for Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Social Workers.

Our aspiration is to continually enhance the student experience on all our professional programmes, through the delivery of intellectually stimulating, research-rich education, taught by world renowned, expert academics and practitioners in their field of study. We produce highly employable graduates with high level professional knowledge and skills. Through our interprofessional education delivery, students also have experience of learning together to work together, across and within professional groups. This ensures that our graduates have a well-developed ability to work in collaboration with others, they are critical thinkers with an inquiring mind, able to truly make a positive difference in the world through their professional employment. Our graduates leave our School as highly valued alumni, most of whom go on to support and educate future students as part of our Edinburgh Napier University, health and social care community of practice.

Research in our School is multi-disciplinary, another feature of our collaborative working culture in the School. Our work aims to make a positive health and social care impact on local, national, and international communities. Over the past 5 years the University has made significant investment in research leadership resulting in many project successes that have improved health and well-being and addressed the clinical needs of diverse populations across the lifespan. Our research has also improved service delivery; and enhanced the experience of our students. We are committed to methodological innovation, appreciation of service user perspectives and attention to policy relevance through wider application of interventions. Areas of research excellence in the School include cardiovascular health, mental health, maternal health, public health and health and social services research. Our research environment is ambitious and supportive. All of our academic staff have dedicated and protected time to pursue their research or for personal scholarship. You will join a vibrant international, interprofessional community of established and early career researchers, which includes an ever-growing number of PhD students.

Collaboration and partnership are key features of our culture in the School which internally includes academic, professional support, University service departments and also our students, a central focus of our community. Externally, we continually network with our partner stakeholders, locally nationally and internationally which includes: the NHS; social care sector; voluntary sector; private organisations; and other Higher Education providers. Our partners provide placements for our students and we work together to ensure the education needs of the students are met. These partnerships are also a foundation for our collaborative research, and we have many successful on-going funded projects of national and international importance and influence. New colleagues who join our team have an opportunity to link in and join existing research groups and are also supported to grow new research partnerships in their areas of interest, in line with School research and enterprise priorities.
