Centre for Systems Modelling & Quantitative Biomedicine (SMQB)

We are seeking to appoint three talented individuals to join the Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine at the University of Birmingham. Two academic roles to grow innovative industry-facing interdisciplinary research, and a Business Development Manager to drive external partnerships and commercial opportunities.

  • Associate Professor of Quantitative Biomedicine (Research & Education)
  • Centre Fellow (Grade 8, research-focused)
  • Business Development Manager

This comes at an exciting time for the SMQB with an anticipated move in early 2024 into the Precision Health Technologies Accelerator, a unique innovation and accelerator facility which is part of the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus. The PHTA provides state-of-the-art incubation and collaboration space and SMQB will be co-located with innovative health and life science businesses, bringing together entrepreneurs, start-ups and scale-ups together with the next generation of academic and clinical leaders, creating unique opportunities to commercialise ideas and accelerate the rapid development of cutting-edge therapies and technologies.

The SMQB brings together outstanding scientists and innovators from our School of Mathematics, School of Computer Science and the Institute for Metabolism and Systems Research in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences. We have a strong track record of co-development of innovative data-enabled research with a range of partners including academics, clinical researchers, patients and the public and industry and strong links with several other university activities, including the Healthcare Technologies Institute, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Science & AI, the Centre for Digital Health and the Centre for Human Brain Health. The centre leads the new MSc in Biomedical Innovation which brings together teams of post-graduate students with complementary backgrounds to develop needs-led solutions to unmet healthcare challenges.

These new roles will facilitate further integration of SMQB into the expanding healthcare ecosystem in the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus and leverage new research and commercial opportunities with other PHTA tenants to drive innovation, purposeful interdisciplinary research and economic growth across academic disciplines, healthcare, and industry.

We welcome outstanding individuals to join us in supporting and taking us the next stage of our exciting journey.
