Our combined higher and further education offering is spread over campuses in Derby, Buxton, Leek and Chesterfield and we have some of the best university facilities in the UK, investing more than £200 million in facilities in the last 10 years. We are now among the top 20 universities in the UK for teaching quality, and has risen six places overall in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide league table to joint 13th in the country for teaching quality; an excellent achievement and a reflection of our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold Award. We are ranked as one of the UK’s top 30 universities in The Guardian’s University Guide for 2019 and among the world’s top 250 modern universities in the Times Higher Education Young University rankings and was recently presented with the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year Award at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs).
Our research is wide-ranging and internationally recognised and our research teams are working on projects that are: helping businesses become more efficient and sustainable; improving the lives of young people; predicting and reducing climate change; helping to conserve our local heritage and environment; developing new technologies such as artificial intelligence; supporting the transformation of health and social care services and making a significant contribution to national and international policy agendas. College of Business, Law and Social Sciences
The College of Business, Law and Social Sciences comprises the Derby Business School and the School of Law and Social Sciences. It employs approximately 180 academic staff and offers undergraduate, postgraduate and professional study opportunities across a wide range of disciplines, with a growing cohort of over 4,000 students. The College thinks beyond the qualification and prepares our students for the career or role they aspire to. Our portfolio of industry relevant degrees, many accredited by leading professional bodies, and our strong links with regional, national and international employers, means our students leave us better qualified, and better connected.
Derby Business School
Derby Business School offers a wide range of undergraduate subjects, in the discipline areas of Accounting, Business, Economics and Finance, Leadership, Logistics, Marketing and People Management. Our students mix with real business leaders, and our commitment to real-world learning is highlighted throughout their studies, with fieldtrips, networking opportunities and work placements at their fingertips. Our students can also take advantage of the University’s ‘Go Places Go Further’ programme, and study abroad at partner institutions abroad. Our Business, Management and Marketing has been ranked Top 10 in the Guardian League Table 2019, while four of our Business programmes achieved 100% overall satisfaction in the NSS 2018.
School of Law and Social Sciences
The School of Law, Criminology and Social Sciences offers courses in Policing, Social and Political Sciences, Law, Criminal Psychology and Criminology, which is ranked Top 20 in the Guardian League Table 2018. Our Policing team have secured the first Policing Apprenticeships to be awarded in the country. A common thread across all subjects taught within the School is a commitment to social justice and the School seeks to be a catalyst for positive change. Our Law degrees also help students to develop professional skills in judicial shadowing, pro bono legal work, professional mentoring and mooting and legal skills competitions. It also operates the Student Legal Advice Centre while our Criminology received the national British Society of Criminology Teaching and Excellence Award in 2018 and Sociology achieving 100% overall satisfaction in the NSS 2018.
