UWE Bristol

Centre for Appearance Research

The Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) was established in 1992 at UWE Bristol. It is a thriving research centre with an international reputation as a centre of research excellence and a leading force in the field of psychological and interdisciplinary applied research in appearance, disfigurement, body image and related studies. With more than 30 academics, researchers and postgraduate research students, CAR offers a stimulating environment for research and knowledge exchange and is home to an experienced and internationally renowned group of researchers who are passionate about delivering authoritative and relevant research. CAR is one of UWE’s recognized centres of research excellence and has a broad portfolio of externally funded research projects, public engagement and knowledge exchange activities.

Within the Centre, we have a fast-paced international team of experienced and early career researchers working on a long-standing trailblazing academic partnership between the Centre for Appearance Research and the Dove Self-Esteem Project, a global youth education initiative funded by Unilever. The team’s portfolio of applied body image and mental health projects focus on the co-creation and evaluation of innovative digital and community-based interventions in close partnership with Dove and organisations like UNICEF, the World Association for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, digital and creative agencies, and media platforms. The overarching aim of these interventions is to promote positive body image and equitable environments that value acceptance of diverse appearances. To date, the evidence-based tools developed from the partnership have been delivered to over 30 million young people in over 130 countries.
