Fixed term until 31 March 2022

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,799 to £38,832. With potential progression once in post to £41,212 a year.

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to join a project funded by the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Inflammation. The BRC comprises a number of themes with the overarching aim of the Sarcopenia theme being to further understand and overcome the sarcopenia of chronic inflammatory disease (rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic liver disease). The post holder will investigate the efficacy of exercise and novel nutritional stimuli to maintain muscle mass, function and quality in these patients. They will join the research group of Dr Carolyn Greig in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham, while also working closely with the Sarcopenia theme lead, Prof Janet Lord. The sub-theme leads and clinical and allied health professions staff within the NIHR BRC and the NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, University Hospital Birmingham. The project will utilise state of the art technology (imaging, stable isotope tracer techniques) to measure muscle mass and quality, alongside functional and patient centred outcome measures.

Applicants should have a PhD in Physiology or other relevant life science, with a track record in studying musculoskeletal ageing and health/ skeletal muscle metabolism. Experience with analytical methods including stable isotope tracer methodology is desirable along with experience of working in a clinical research environment with older and/or patient populations.
