Appointment of Head of the School of Physiotherapy

RCSI now seeks to appoint:

  • A leader who is passionate about the education of physiotherapists, with a track record in educational development
    • A leader with a research profile that complements our institutional translational research priorities, for instance in population heath and health services research
  • a leader who is dedicated to excellence in the quality of educational programmes, and with an unrelenting focus on quality and quality improvement in all aspects of their role

Person Specification Essential:

A doctoral degree (or equivalent higher qualification) in physiotherapy or a cognate area

Significant post-doctoral experience

A record of international level research, with a clear track-record in scientific research, as evidenced by relevant publications in international peer-reviewed literature and/or prior research grant funding

The drive, energy and initiative to promote continuous improvement and change

A track record of achieving results with the ability to act decisively and meet milestones

Excellent managerial and budgeting skills, with the ability to:

  • align the activities of the school and its staff with the RCSI vision
  • encourage and support individual and collective development
  • inspire action from others
  • build effective teams

Excellent communication and collaboration with colleagues at all levels and disciplines

Excellent interpersonal skills, and team working skills

Registered or eligible for registration with CORU, the Health and Social Care Professions Regulator in Ireland

Principal Duties and Responsibilities


  • Leading the implementation of the School of Physiotherapy vision by providing leadership in teaching, research, scholarship and academic administration, in line with the newly published Faculty Strategy of Transforming Healthcare Education, Research and Service 2018-2022
  • Providing effective leadership to School of Physiotherapy staff, inspiring, motivating, coaching and developing our high-achieving team
  • Contributing to the governance of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
  • Representing the School of Physiotherapy and RCSI on such committees and external bodies as may be appropriate
  • Undertaking overseas activities as required


  • Developing and overseeing research programmes in physiotherapy and cognate sciences

Education - Quality and Regulation

  • Overseeing and participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in physiotherapy and examinations of RCSI
  • Participating in continuous curriculum development and instituting innovative methods of delivering physiotherapy education
  • Ensuring educational programmes are developed and delivered in accordance with regulatory and legislative framework requirements


  • Establishing national and international research collaborations
  • Forging strong links and collaborations with other education institutions and clinical partners
  • Engaging with and collaborating with other Departments in RCSI with regard to the planning and execution of education and research projects


  • Preparing and managing annual budgets for the School of Physiotherapy
  • Implementing policies and decisions as determined by the Dean and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences


  • Complying with statutory legislation and implementing RCSI policies and procedures in furtherance of own and general staff welfare and safety
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
  • Representing the best interests of RCSI at all times
  • Performing such other related duties as may be requested from time to time
