Project description

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Network Security. Network Security is a subset of Cyber Security; its role is to protect an IT infrastructure from cyber threats. This can be implemented by using various devices and techniques such as firewalls, antivirus software as well as intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS).

The successful applicant will conduct research as part of a research collaboration between Juniper Networks and the School of Computer Science in the University of Hertfordshire. Our university is a member of the Juniper Networks academic alliance.

The successful candidate will be situated in the Cyber Security Centre of the School of Computer Science and will have the opportunity to work with state of the art Juniper Networks devices such as firewalls, routers, switches and servers.

Research in Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire has been recognized as excellent in the REF 2014, with 50% of the research submitted rated as internationally excellent or world leading.

The University of Hertfordshire provides a very stimulating environment, offering a large number of specialised and interdisciplinary seminars as well as general training and researcher development opportunities. The University is situated in Hatfield, in the green belt just north of London.

Candidate Requirements:

The successful applicant will be expected to be familiar with networking and security fundamentals although full training and opportunities for certifications will be provided via our collaboration with Juniper Networks. Knowledge of a networking operating system like JUNOS, IOS or similar and/or traffic generation and testing is desirable but not essential. Applications from candidates with experience in firewall/router configuration and troubleshooting are particularly welcomed.

Entry Requirements
Applicants are expected to hold a first or upper-second class degree in a relevant discipline (or equivalent overseas qualification), or a good MSc degree (or equivalent experience/qualifications).

Non UK/EU nationals without an academic degree from the UK will normally be required to have IELTS of 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with at least 6.0 in each individual component.

The position is open to home and overseas students.
